1954: Boarding school boy renames himself
An eight-year-old boy arrives at St. Peter's School in Panchgani, a British-style boarding school in the hills of India. Here, far from home, he starts introducing himself by a new name: Freddie. The name sticks for the rest of his life.

c. 1958-1959: Schoolboy band: the Hectics
At twelve, he pulls together a school band and calls them the Hectics. They hammer through rock and roll covers, Cliff Richard, Elvis Presley, Little Richard. The classroom piano becomes his first stage.

1964: Family flees to England
In 1964 the Zanzibar Revolution forces his family to flee. They arrive in Middlesex, England, starting over in a cold suburban country with almost nothing familiar. Freddie is seventeen and a long way from the hills of Panchgani.

1966-1969: Art student, Ealing Art College
He enrols at Ealing Art College to study graphic art and design. For three years his world is sketchbooks, lettering and layout, and in 1969 he walks away with a diploma. The rock star spends his early twenties as an art student.

1969-1971: Second-hand clothes stall, Kensington
With the diploma framed, he sets up a second-hand clothes stall in Kensington Market. His business partner behind the rails is a drummer named Roger Taylor. They spend their days haggling over used jackets in a crowded London arcade.

1969: Singer for Ibex, then Wreckage
In 1969 he joins Ibex, a band out of Liverpool that later renames itself Wreckage. Their sound is Hendrix-style heavy blues, loud and raw. It is the first proper group to put a microphone in his hands.

To pay the rent, he takes a job as a baggage handler at Heathrow Airport. Long shifts of lifting suitcases onto trolleys under jet engines and grey London sky. Nobody on the tarmac knows what is coming.

April 1970: Lead singer of Smile
April 1970: he teams up with Roger Taylor and guitarist Brian May and becomes the lead singer of their band, Smile. The market-stall friendship turns into a line-up. From here, the story stops being ordinary.
